cities greenThe project aims at helping municipalities in setting strategic directions towards increasing energy efficiency, producing renewable energy, reducing local greenhouse gas emissions and mobilizing relevant stakeholders through providing them with relevant skills and supportive tools. Although municipalities are very committed to the climate action, it is often difficult for them to calculate and understand their CO2 emissions, as well as do develop and analyse different possible scenarios for the future. The CommitClimate project will help them by building relevant capacities among municipal staff and local stakeholders and by providing new computer-based simulation model for carbon footprint calculation and future scenario modelling (called CommitClimate simulator). Representatives of local authorities will test and use the simulator to create local sustainable energy and climate action plans for reaching climate neutrality.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES:

  • acquisition of energy data from pilot municipalities
  • building the CommitClimate CO2 simulator model
  • customisation of the model and test scenario runs
  • practical application of CO2 simulator in a wider pool of municipalities
  • development of the training module for energy and climate neutrality transition
  • engaging citizens in energy and climate neutrality transition
  • widespread dissemination of project results and lessons learnt

EXPECTED PROJECT RESULTS:

The key project result will be an on-line platform containing CommitClimate Simulator – an on-line simulation model that can be used to calculate local carbon footprint and model future carbon reduction scenarios. Local authorities will support the development of the system, test it and use for the elaboration or update of their climate and energy plans and strategies. Citizens and local stakeholders will be actively involved in the process. The CommitClimate platform will also contain the  training material to be used by all municipalities in energy transition process.

PROJECT PARTNERS:

The coordinator of the project is the Riga Technical University. The Polish partners are the Association of Municipalities Polish Network  „Energie Cités” and the municipalities of Pałecznica and Raciechowice. In total, the project involves 10 partners from 4 EU countries.
